GERONTOLOGY The growing interest
in understanding the process of aging has given rise to the many fields
of gerontology, the study of the biological, psychological, and social
aspects of aging. Gerontologists include researchers and
practitioners in such diverse fields as biology, medicine, nursing,
dentistry, psychology, sociology, economics, political science, and
social work. These individuals are concerned with many aspects of aging,
from studying and describing the processes involved, to seeking ways of
improving the quality
of life for older people. SITUATION CRITICAL At
the turn of the century in USA, the life expectancy was approximately
47 years of age. In
1935 when Social Security was introduced, the payout began at Age
65…Life expectancy in 1935 was only 59 years of age. In
1950, the average life expectancy was 68 years of age. In
2000, the average life expectancy was 78 years.
There
are now more 100-year-olds alive than at any other time in history, and
longevity studies are finding many of them are active, healthy and
engaged with the world around them.
In 2000, there were in excess of 50,545 individuals who had
reached this stage in life. By
the year 2025, experts suggest that this number will have grown to
greater than 1,000,000. In
the coming decades, elders will comprise a larger share of the American
population. As of 2000,
there were 59,266,437 individuals who were 55+. This represented about
21% of the total population in the United States.
It is expected that by 2010 there will be in excess of
114,100,000 million individuals over the age of 55 in the United States.
This will represent approximately 35% of the total population.
The
55+ population controls 70% of all financial assets in the U.S.

above facts are astounding, but a reality.
